Sharpening Your Skates

Information to be added

Skate Checks

The club provides services to check your skates. If you require any of these services then contact a member of the committee for advise on how to access this service.

1. New Skates
If you have purchased new skates get them checked to ensure that they conform to ISU regulations. If they do not meet the requirements you will not be allowed to skate on them.
  •  Some new skates need the blade ends rounded off. For safety reasons the ends should have the curve of a 2 pence piece.
This service is provided free of charge by the club.

2. Radius
Picture
The radius refers to the gentle arc of the bottom edge of the skate blade from heel to toe.
The entire skate blade would not rest on a flat surface.

After a while of sharpening your skates this arc becomes flattened, and needs rounding again.

The club has a radius machine that can correct this.
This service is provided at a charge of £15 if the radius needs adjusting.

3. Bend
Picture
The bend refers to a gentle bowing of the entire blade as it curves ever so slightly along the length of the boot.
For more advanced skaters this is advantageous.

This service is provided free of charge by the club.
4. Annual Check
It is recommend that at least once a year  you have your skates checked, as over time  sharpening will remove the radius and the bend might need adjusting.

A log is kept by the club of when checks performed on skates.
